My car key got stuck in the ignition key. What should I do?

While a car locksmith can professionally remove the ignition key, there are some things you can try on your own. A common cause of getting the ignition key stuck actually involves the cables underneath the dashboard that may be blocking the ignition. We suggest reaching under the dashboard to move away any cable that seems to be blocking the ignition. You may find three cables and not know what to do. Try giving each of them a slight gentle tug. If your ignition key doesn’t come out, you can call a car locksmith for help.

What is a transponder key? How do I know if I have one?

A transponder key, also known as a “chip key,” is a coded electronic transponder that is matched to an individual vehicle. The unique electronic code must be verified by the vehicle’s electronic control unit in order to start the car. If you don’t have the right code embedded in your key, the car won’t start.
Since the actual chip / code is embedded within the plastic key covering, it is not easy to know right away if you have a transponder key. However, here are some easy ways to know the answer. Take a look at your key. If there is a red light in the shape of a car on it that flashes every 2 seconds or so, it has a transponder. When you put the key in the ignition, the light should turn off.

My remote control key has stopped working. What should I do?

Vehicles with remote central locking have a special unique code that does to the specific vehicle. If the batteries are not replaced in time and they expire, the remote can lose its ability to match to the vehicle. Key programming is then required – or a new key will be programmed altogether. Locksmiths typically carry special diagnostic machines to handle key programming.

My only car key (not a chip key) broke! Do I need to get all new locks and keys for the car?
